As an introvert hermit, I share this information so you can see what resonates and decide if we’re a good match.
My favorite genres include fantasy, mystery, biography/memoir, and big idea non-fiction. Fiction I’ve enjoyed recently includes: Uprooted and Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson, The Broken Earth trilogy by N. K. Jemisin, Threads by Nell Gavin, Replay by Ken Grimwood, the Age of Myth series by Michael J. Sullivan, and A Deepness in the Sky by Vernor Vingey. Non-fiction recent standout reads include: Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari, Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed, We Learn Nothing by Tim Kreider, and The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp.
I’m the founder and Chief Inspiration Officer of Native Intelligence, Inc., a story-based cybersecurity awareness business in operation since 1997.
I find joy in making laser art and digital stock art (photos and illustrations). See my portfolio on Shutterstock.
As a student of force, I practice tai chi, qigong, and bo (a six-foot pole arm).
In my wild and misspent youth, I was a volunteer paramedic (technically, a Cardiac Rescue Technician).
I’m interested in just about everything, but special interests include resilience, contact juggling, illustration, listening to a Capella music, psychology, photography, making…
I like most mammals (and I like turtles!). Two rescue cats share my home and supervise my work. I once broke an ankle (sadly, mine) while walking a dog from a Segway.
Recently, I (along with many others) was asked to send a postcard to two young boys as part of special holiday effort, with the statement: I believe in… followed by one, and only one word. My response was: I believe in … being a rebel.
I have survived indescribable grief, like most of humanity.
Miscellaneous skills achieved through study and practice: cat pilling, cooking scrambled Boursin eggs over toasted brioche rolls (the secret is to cook the eggs low and slow), and playing with the Sun tai chi long form and the 18 Hands of Lohan.
What else? I’ve been in zero G. I’ve piloted small planes, cooked a tasty meal, changed a diaper, taken orders, given orders, comforted the dying, cooperated, acted alone, balanced accounts, conned a ship (if a small cat counts), written a sonnet, analyzed a new problem, pitched manure, and set a bone, but I still have far to go to complete Robert Heinlein’s "specialization is for insects" list.
My religion, like the Dalai Lama’s, is kindness.
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.
— Robert A. Heinlein
Nobody ever takes note of my advice, because it’s not the answer they wanted to hear. What they want to hear is ‘Here’s how you get an agent, here’s how you write a script,’… but I always say, ‘Be so good they can’t ignore you.’
