Something magical happens when you work with a book coach.
A book coach is a professional who works with an author from the idea generation and outline stages, through the writing and revising, to the pitch-ready manuscript. A developmental editor usually works with manuscripts after they are written, but a book coach helps authors make effective structural and story choices along the way and acts as a sounding board, project manager, and cheerleader.
A book coach provides tough love (with emphasis on the love), helping authors meet deadlines and fix what isn’t working, so the story the author brings to life is the best it can be.
Book coaching as a profession arose from changes in the publishing industry. Before the internet, ebooks, and the self-publishing options of Kindle Direct, publishing houses would assign an editor who managed a team that worked to nurture an author’s career. Today, literary agents and publishers don’t have time to work with and nurture authors in the traditional way.
The good news for authors is that the advent of self-publishing means that they no longer have to fret about literary gatekeepers. It also means that authors must nurture their own careers and put together their own teams to make their work shine.
Learning is a way of life. 2019 learning highlights include:
I’m K (or Kaie) Rudolph, Inspired Book Coaching’s primary book coach. My favorite genres include fantasy, biography/memoir, and big idea non-fiction. You can learn more about me.
“I recommend K highly. I engaged K as an editor for two thirty-page technical documents that were the end result of weeks of technical work. She found and fixed the formatting errors, then she edited the layout so that the document looked much better than I could do. But the part I really appreciate is that K took my awkward phrases and logic problems and either fixed them or pointed them out to me (where they were too confusing to even fix). On the second document, when I was running out of time, I asked her to ghost write entire sections based on a template. Her writing was excellent and was better than I would have been capable of.”
